Q: You have
spearheaded a Research Project which has brought thousands of
lost images to light. What inspired you to do this.
About three years ago, I was toying with the idea of making a
video about facial exercise and putting it on an infomercial. I
was working on a business plan and was advised to mention that I
had been a top model for awhile in the Sixties. I had appeared
in many innovative styles and was a muse to Pierre Cardin. Most
of this was only documented in magazines which had become
increasingly rare and expensive to obtain, so there was not much
reference to my body of work.
After receiving my proposal, the investor did a Google search
on me. Nothing came up but two walk-ons I had in a few movies,
mostly just for fun because I knew the directors. He actually
said that for a top model there was nothing at all about me on
the web. It was almost embarrassing. Luckily I had
my yellowing tearsheets, to prove that I was telling the truth.
Later
I did a search for my own name and saw that he was right right!
There was nothing but a bit part I had done in an Italian B
movie! There were some very nice publicity photos for sale which
I was glad to find. But where was my Mademoiselle cover, my
pages in Italian Vogue or Vogue Paris?
All was lost, all
those national ads, all those trips to exotic places,
fabulous clothes, hair and make-up. Then I Googled many of the
top models of the Sixties. There was nothing about them either!
Most of them had no footprint on the web at all, even though in
their day they had been sought after international beauties,
appearing in major cosmetic campaigns, on magazine covers and in
fashion ads.
How did
miniMadMOD60s get started?
"As I looked through my scrapbooks and the loose magazine pages
I noticed that they were getting fragile with age. Many were
missing. I thought about having them scanned and put onto a CD
so that I could preserve them. But it got me to thinking. Why
shouldn't there be a
website about the great models of the Sixties, Seventies and
before? These girls who were all over the covers of Vogue and
Bazaar and doing ten page spreads inside. If there had been a
web then, they would all have been all over the Internet."
"Each picture
was a wonderful creative efforts on the part of photographers,
models, stylists, editors beauty artists. I could remember
it all so vividly. Not my own career which was sporadic as
I often booked out for months at a time to pursue my education
and languages. During my travels I knew who every model was on
the pages of the magazines. I especially enjoyed Willy van Rooy,
Kecia Nyman.and
Margrit Ramme's pictures. There was nothing about these super
star fashion model on the web yet. I wanted to do something
about that. So I began to attract a team of like minded
individuals.
